Read this article on slashdot... here
In many domains people are tempted to think, after the fact, that an outcome was entirely predictable, and that the success of a musician, an actor, an author, or a politician was inevitable in light of his or her skills and characteristics. Beware of that temptation. Small interventions and even coincidences, at a key stage, can produce large variations in the outcome. Today's hot singer is probably indistinguishable from dozens and even hundreds of equally talented performers whose names you've never heard.
In short, an experiment was performed with a group of music listening young adults. The researchers were able to manipulate the outcome, the most popular song, by manipulating the PERCEPTION of popularity of the songs amongst the peer groups. The songs/artists themselves had very little to do with it...
The moral of the story... marketing. Thats a big loaded word that alot of people don't understand. It means make yourself look popular, make it appear as though alot of people like and listen to your music, even if they don't. This will bring you more fans than good music. I can taste the bile in the back of my throat as I say that, I hate it but it's true. Cheat if necessary, be totally fake, live a lie.
Its incontrovertable, experimentally derived, double blind taste tested truth: HYPE MATTERS.
It is the only thing that matters.

Yo, I wonder how far shyt like this goes...? I'm actually awed after reading this to sit back and think...did most rappers make it in this game lying? Perhaps they did...but who cares after they get money? Once they get the cash- its a rap. They keep on pushin'. and selling anywho. The name of the game is pimpin.

Re: HYPE MATTERS
well, MJ.. ask yourself this... why is it that you see all type of nice cars and jewels in videos? When the song has nothing to do with all that for real... why all this flossin, in an artists first video.. you know he aint makin money yet, he got an advance, but that goes to recording, promotion, and the cost of the video itself. At the time of a the first video, an artist is in debt to the label, typically to the tune of $250k+. Most of the time those cars and jewels are rented just for the video. Why is it so important at this point in a career, before making any real $$ off sales or royalties, to be putting it out there like that... the answer is that an appearance of success brings success. Why?
Because people want to feel hip and smart, they do that by liking what everybody else likes. (Not everybody of course, lets say 80%-90% of people are followers, 15% consider themselves tastemakers and maybe 1% truly are, they are the marketers) The point behind pretty much all marketing... 4 out of 5 dentists prefer, best rated car in America, Pepsi taste tests, etc etc... everybody else is consuming this product, you should be too.
Posting this was half cynical, but the problem is I can't remember which half... I guess its not so much "lying" as "marketing". Either way, putting an image out there that appears successful can attract success.

Re: HYPE MATTERS
I totally agree. I believe that the rap game is more of making the right decisions at the right time when it comes to Marketing. The appearance of someone making a video neccessarily for the hype is true in a position, but also - fake in the means to create the reality they see before them. What can make money besides money? A Hustla is always on the edge to create and maintain stability onthe course. This is life and everyone out here is looking to create a life outside the one they live. I live the raps I have - that is why my lyric's at the moment in all my songs other then Bottle Poppin' are so significant to my Success to this date: I have alid down a foundation that not one man can remove from under me. I came out on lyrics spittin' directly from Def Poetry. I have had Poets such as J.Ivy stop by my profile and check out songs like My Mind and tell me thier honest opinion. I have not recieved any negative feedback from anyone yet - because I have the approach that I created with the mindset that the game is set up for me to fail. I can not fail if I treat the game the way the game treats me..basically mirror image.
I sometimes think that I got the rap game lost just to find it on my on. I went the poetry route spittin' directly to the hearts of people to see what they like and dislike. I have found that in poetry when you spit your heart on a stage, the feedback from the people is either negative or a standing ovation. I perfer not to have a standing o, and that people just listen. They would see through me how to stand on giants falling victim to pray. Some people bite styles and others create - but both have a unique position. You can only win or lose, which is the same. You have the same enemies if you win 100 basketball game as well as if you lost 100 basketball games. So in the end. Nothing matters but the foundation you built to stand firm.
